JULES

The oldest of seven children with an eighth due any day, Julia does her best to be what everyone expects of her: a great student, a cheerful teen newscaster, and a faithful patriot. But when she and her boyfriend discover a secret about their little Nevada town of Yucca Flat, Julia is thrust into a mission she never imagined she'd be qualified to do:

Take down the USSR's atomic magicians for the good of the free world, by whatever means necessary.

YASENETS IS ALSO CALLED "BURNING BUSH" BECAUSE IT'S FULL OF VOLATILE OILS, AND CAN CATCH FIRE VERY EASILY. THOSE OILS WILL CAUSE BLISTERING AND SWELLING IF SOMEONE TOUCHES THEM AND THEN LETS THE SUN SHINE ON THEIR SKIN WHERE THE OILS ARE. THE SCARRING CAN LAST FOR YEARS.

BUT THE FLOWERS ARE REALLY PRETTY.

COMRADE GAVEZNIANSKIY

No one who has ever met Barys Petrovich Gaveznianskiy could deny his dedication to the Communist Party. Even when his little brother was taken away, he knew it was for the good of the Motherland. Now, on the cusp of his nineteenth birthday, he guards the radioactive wastes between the USSR's Western Front and the distant, hostile Germans, waiting for the day his brother is sent there to die.

But then an American girl walks across the wastes with no decay, and Barys is pulled into a traitorous plan he'll do anything to escape from.

I’M FAMILIAR WITH HOW PEOPLE THINK OF HELL, AND THIS PLACE IS PRETTY CLOSE. BUT WE AREN'T SINNERS, AT LEAST NOT IN THE EYES OF THE PARTY. WE'RE LOYAL. WE'RE WORTH TRUSTING WITH THE BARRENS, AND THE VOLSHEBNIKI. NORMAL PEOPLE OF THE UNION DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT THEM. EVEN NORMAL SOLDIERS DON'T KNOW MUCH.

THE FACILITY IS HIDDEN SOMEWHERE IN THE EAST. THEY COME OUT TO THE WEST TO DIE. AND THEY EXIST NOWHERE IN BETWEEN.
